Unexpected must be the word
It is quite unusual this time of year to see new born lambs in Iceland. None the less that is what happened here on the farm today.
The sheep were to be taken inside due to a bad forecast and the last of the sheep to walk home was standing alone there with a perky and healthy looking lamb.
The mother had not been lambing this spring as intended but obviously decided to make up for it anyway. First time that happens in our time at Litla-Tunga...

Foaling season
All of a sudden it is summer and nearly all the foals here have been born. It's the time of year when we enjoy driving around looking at all the new babies on the ground and consider stallions to match our mares and dreams.
By now there are just three mares left to deliver the last expected ones.
Updates and photos of the new generation will follow soon.

This daughter of Askja and Álfur frá Selfossi was born last night.

The foals have been taken in
Much later than expected we could get the brood mares home to the farm to stable and wean the foals born 2007. Both mares and foals were looking very good.
Usually this is done around 1st of January but the weather made it difficult for us this winter to do it any earlier than now.

Elding deceased
Our oldest broodmare - Elding frá Þverá - sadly passed away this winter. She would have turned 28 this year.
Elding has over the years given many gæðingar and last summer she threw a good looking mare foal.
The photo to the right was taken the summer of 2007.

New round pen
Our old round pen made of plastic wrapped square bales in 2004 had looked miserable for too long and the effeciency had decreased considerably with the aging of the bales.
We dicided a few weeks ago to do something about it and here is the new and quite improved replacement.

Freeze marking
Before we let out the one-year-olds in their summer pasture, we freeze mark them on their back (where the saddle one day will be) to always be able to identify each individual.
First figure is the last number of the year of birth, then comes our own marking "L" and "T" (Litla-Tunga) put together as one and last figure is the number that this excact horse has.

Elding had a foal
Elding threw a yellow dun mare foal today by Ljúfur frá Vakurstöðum and they are both good looking.
This winter we did not expect that Elding would be in foal, since she had big troubles with her teeth two years ago. She got skinny and wasn't in foal last year.
We thought that this was it for Elding but had proper equine dentistry done on her and she recovered very fast after that.
Today she is looking remarkably good for a 27 year-old mare who has been with a foal almost every year since young age.

After the visit of the dentist...
It was a big success this year also and Mai was busy all the time here. She did teeth on 95 horses during the two weeks here. Among the places she was working were Hornafjörður - where she also gave a lecture on equine dentistry - Akurgerði, Hafnarfjöður, Langholti and of course here in Litla-Tunga.
We would like to thank Mai K. Nicholaisen for coming to Iceland again and for the enormous interest people have shown her work.
Many well known horses had dentistry this time, for example:
- Þula frá Hólum
- Tigull frá Gygjarhóli
- Freyðir frá Hafsteinsstöðum
- Órator frá Grafarkoti
- Þjótandi frá Svignaskarði
- Orka frá Sauðárkróki
...and many others.

The dentist is back
The beginning of the year is usually the time when people start to think about taking in their horses and start riding them again and here in Litla-Tunga we are no exception.
The last two years we have had the danish equine dental technician Mai K. Nicolaisen (IAED), who is a good friend of Kathrine, coming here to do dentistry on the horses who are in training and the broodmares.
Other trainers from aruond the area came with horses to Mai too and some of them in
2006 were:- Álfur frá Selfossi
- Hátíð frá Ulfstöðum
- Röðull frá Kálfholti
- Þristur frá Feti
- Þorsti frá Garði
- Eldjárn
frá Tjaldholum
Mai is not fully booked yet so if you have interest in having your horse's teeth done by her, you are welcome to contact her on mail or phone +45 20323280 for questions or contact us to order time.

Winter is over us
The last days and almost weeks bad weather has been over us. We were planning to stable the foals aruond the new year but the frost and snow have not made it possible.
The training has been standing still for a while so we decided to rearrange stuff in the big barn and have now made space for indoor activities with the horses when the weather is worst.

Several young horses are still left to be taken in to start training again after the winter break.
They forecast predict changes and better weather the next days which we strongly hope will hold, so we can finish what has been delayed too long by the wind, frost and snow.
